Canker sores, mouth sores or apthous stomatitis are mouth ulcers with no known cause. However, there are certain factors that may contribute to the development of mouth ulcers. These include biting the cheek or lip, stress and immunodeficiency. Though there is nothing serious to worry about, having mouth ulcers can cause pain and discomfort which can later on affect our ability to chew the food that we eat as well as the way we talk.
Most of the time, we do not need to seek consultation from a doctor to manage mouth ulcers. In fact, there are several available effective and safe home remedies to treat canker sores and to minimize pain and discomfort.
A simple yet effective way to soothe canker sores is by gargling warm saline solution. This remedy works through the process of osmosis which draws out water from the cells thereby reducing the painful puffiness. Aside from this, another known effective natural remedy or treatment for mouth ulcers is the application of chamomile tea bag soaked in water. Studies show that chamomile contains bisabolol or levomenol, a compound that has anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties which can speed up the healing process.
On the other hand, honey has also been found to be effective in treating mouth ulcers. Aside from having anti-microbial properties, it is also considered as natural humectant which maintains the moisture and hastens the process of new tissue growth. You can also try drinking tender coconut water, applying coconut oil or chewing fresh or dry coconut to reduce pain and inflammation.
Lastly, you also need to take note of some measures to minimize pain and discomfort caused by mouth ulcers. Reduce or avoid intake of acidic or spicy foods as well as abrasive foods such as nuts as these may irritate your mouth ulcers. It is also advisable that you switch to toothpaste that does not have the ingredient called sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), a foaming agent that may contribute to recurrences.
