Gonorrhea can affect both men and women. Typically, symptoms are not observable especially for a female patient but they usually appear two to five days after the infection but can take up to 30 days.
Female patients may experience painful or frequent urination, anal itching, discomfort, bleeding, or discharge, abnormal vaginal discharge, abnormal vaginal bleeding during or after sex or between periods, genital itching, irregular menstrual bleeding, lower abdominal (belly) pain, fever and general tiredness, swollen and painful glands at the opening of the vagina (Bartholin glands), painful sexual intercourse and in rare cases, sore throat and conjunctivitis. On the other hand, male patients may complain of abnormal discharge from the penis (clear or milky at first, and then yellow, creamy, and excessive, sometimes blood-tinged) and painful or frequent urination or urethritis.
Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae bacterium infection. It infects the mucous membranes of the reproductive tract, including the cervix, uterus, and fallopian tubes in women, and the urethra in women and men. N. gonorrhoeae can also infect the mucous membranes of the mouth, throat, eyes, and anus. This type of STD is transmitted through sexual contact with the penis, vagina, mouth, or anus of an infected partner. Ejaculation does not have to occur for gonorrhea to be transmitted or acquired. Gonorrhea can also spread perinatally from mother to baby during childbirth.
Treatment goals for gonorrhea focus on eliminating the etiologic agent and on preventing the transmission of the infection. The choice of antimicrobial therapy depends on the clinical presentation. Aside from this, there are also some home remedies that are said to cure gonorrhea. One of these is sour sop or guyabano fruit. The juice extracted from the fruit can be taken in orally as an herbal home remedy and natural cure for urethritis. It naturally contains high amounts of Vitamins C, B1 and B2, potassium and dietary fiber. Aside from this, with its antibacterial properties, mangosteen rind decoction is also helpful in treating gonorrhea and in getting rid of the symptoms. Lastly, prevention is always better than cure. Hence, practice safe sex with the use of latex condoms. This can greatly reduce the chances of transmission, but does not totally eliminate the risk.
